A rider who does not have a driving licence has been arrested for crashing through a roadblock and hitting a taxi, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a press conference yesterday.
The 23-year-old male suspect surnamed Tang told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Lam, traffic police officers set up a roadblock near the local airport at 2:15 a.m. on Friday. When the officers signalled a motorcycle without its headlights on to stop for inspection, the rider abruptly accelerated, crashing through the roadblock. Subsequently, the police pursued the motorcycle, during which it collided with a taxi. Tang was thrown from the motorcycle but quickly remounted and fled, managing to evade the authorities.
Thanks to CCTV footage, the Public Security Police managed to trace the motorcycle, which Tang rode to a car park in a residential building on the peninsula’s Rua de Francisco Xavier Pereira. The police apprehended Tang in the residential building’s lobby later that morning.
Lam said PSP officers later discovered that Tang has a police record with seven previous offences of driving without a licence.
Under questioning, Tang told the police that due to his lack of a driver’s licence, he feared being arrested again and thus chose to crash through the roadblock.
Tang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). He faces charges of dangerous driving, disobeying a police order and evading responsibility.
