In the first 20 days of this year 990 vehicle registrations were cancelled, up by 54 percent year-on-year, Kou Kun Pang, convener of the government-appointed Traffic Consultative Council, said yesterday.
Kou made the remarks when briefing reporters after the council’s first closed-door meeting this year at the Transport Bureau (DSAT).
Kou said members of the council generally agreed with the partly contested increase in vehicle-related fees which took effect on New Year’s Day. “We can see from the statistics that the measure has been effective,” he said.
According to Kou, the rate of drivers paying for parking at parking meters has risen from 40 to 50 percent since the hike in vehicle-related fees. The removal of illegally parked cars now costs 1,500 patacas.
