The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced in a statement yesterday that a local elderly woman died in hospital yesterday after committing suicide by drinking drain cleaner in a hotel guestroom on Monday.
According to the statement, the Public Security Police (PSP) notified the Judiciary Police at around 4:45 p.m. yesterday of the case.
The statement said that the woman committed suicide by drinking drain cleaner in the hotel guestroom in Zape in the early hours of Monday, after which she was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment.
She died in the hospital yesterday afternoon after treatment to save her life had failed.
The statement said that after receiving the PSP report, PJ officers went to the hotel guestroom for investigation, adding that there were no signs indicating that a fight had occurred there.
A preliminary examination of the body showed that she suffered injuries caused by corrosive liquid, according to the statement, which said that there were no suspected criminal injuries on the body.
An autopsy will be carried out to confirm the exact cause of the woman’s death, the statement said.
The case has initially been classified as a dead body found, the statement said.
