The Lands and Urban Construction Bureau (DSSCU) has announced that the two old shophouses at the junction of Rua dos Mercadores and Travessa dos Algibebes gutted by a fire last week will be demolished.

The ground floors of the shophouses were used as a takeaway and a clothes-bag shop respectively.

The blaze erupted in the takeaway in the early hours of Tuesday last week and spread to the adjacent shop.

A DSSCU statement on Friday said that the two buildings are old shophouses and are wooden structures, so DSSCU engineers have concluded that neither are suitable for habitation any longer after the blaze.

After the huge blaze, the bureau has reclassified the two buildings as posing a safety risk because of which both need to be demolished, the statement said.

The statement said that the external structures of both buildings have now been temporarily stabilised, adding that the bureau has ordered their respective owners to submit demolition plans in due course.
