A local woman, who had worked as a casino dealer since 2019, started in February to repeatedly hide casino chips in her clothing while she was on duty, each time stealing one or two HK$10,000 chips, totalling HK$600,000 in total, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Chan said the 49-year-old suspect is surnamed Chong.
The Judiciary Police received a theft report from a casino in Cotai in the early hours of Friday, saying that a dealer had stolen two casino chips each worth HK$10,000 at 8:49 p.m. and 11:31 p.m. on Thursday, hiding them between her thighs on two separate occasions, before taking the opportunity to transfer the chips to the waistband of her skirt, according to Chan, who added that her thieving was finally discovered by her supervisor when she was stealing more casino chips several hours later.
A PJ investigation, according to Chan, showed that the suspect took the stolen chips home after work. PJ officers searching her home in the northern district recovered 17 casino chips worth HK$10,000 each.
Under questioning, Chong admitted to committing the thefts, but insisting that she had gambled away most of the chips stolen from the casino.
Chong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge.
