A local couple was caught red-handed reselling Mark Six lottery tickets in the northern district, Public Security Police spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said during a regular press conference yesterday.

During a search of the duo’s grocery shop on Avenida da Longevidade (長壽大馬路) on Sunday, the Public Security Police seized 58 Mark Six lottery tickets and 1,960 patacas believed to be proceeds from reselling the tickets.

Cheong identified the two suspects as local residents, both surnamed Cheang, aged 57 and 59 respectively. Both started their “business” of reselling lottery tickets in February this year.

Under questioning, the female victim admitted to the crime, saying that she had been buying Mark Six lottery tickets from an unknown mainland man since February and reselling the tickets with a surcharge ranging between five and nine patacas each, according to Cheong, who added that the suspect told the police that she could not remember the actual number of tickets she had purchased and how much she had made from the resale. The male suspect was arrested for having been aware of the Mark Six ticket “business” by his wife.

The duo has been transferred by the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation.

Macau’s new gambling control act was voted on and passed in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, in which suspects of illegally operating or reselling Hong Kong’s Mark Six Lottery tickets in Macau face a jail term of up to two years.
