The tourism sector has increased Macau’s overall tap water consumption by 8 percent so far this month compared to the same period last year, with a double-digit rise in commercial water consumption, due to rising demand from Macau’s hotel sector, including the six local integrated resort operators, Macao Water Executive Director Nacky Kuan Sio Peng said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference at the Lisboeta Macau integrated resort in Cotai for a 40-episode TV drama by a mainland Chinese broadcaster featuring the water supply from Zhuhai to Macau, Kuan said she estimated that the total water use between January and October increased by 6 percent year on year, while domestic water consumption remained unchanged from last year, i.e., 151.2 litres per person daily, according to the Macao Water website.
In terms of the public utility’s Subsidy Programme for Repairing Service Connections of Low-rise Buildings, according to Kuan, since the launch of the programme in 2021, Macao Water has accepted applications from 600 buildings, of which 80 percent have meanwhile been completed. “It is roughly estimated that 800 buildings in Macau are in need of repairs,” she said.
The scheme has been extended to March 31 next year, Kuan noted.
