The film awards season is underway with the Oscars as the finale later this month. Race and gender issues have been ongoing in Hollywood, particularly noticeable through the list of nominations and winners, but Thomas Lim, who made his directorial debut in Macau four years ago and is now working in Hollywood, offers a different perspective for Asians looking to break into the US film industry as he shares his journey to the international film mecca.

Chasing dreams

Originally studying finance in Singapore, Lim got bored and got interested in acting and since then has been hooked, to a point where his life goal is to become a Hollywood director.

He was most inspired by Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller “Memento” and Quentin Tarantino’s neo-noir “Pulp Fiction” and counts Stephen Chow’s martial arts comedy “Kung Fu Hustle” and Hideo Nakata’s psychological horror “Ring” as his favourite Asian films.
