GEG founder & chairman Lui Che-woo passes away at 95

Integrated Resort (IR) operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) Founder and Chairman Lui Che-woo passed away on Thursday at the age of 95.

The GEG announcement last night noted that Lui “passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on 7 November 2024”, expressing its “deepest sorrow” in the statement and thanked him for his “invaluable contributions to the group” during his time as the chairman, as well as the “deepest condolences” to Liu’s family.

According to the statement, Lui – born in 1929 in Jiangmen, a prefecture-level city located some 63 kilometres north-west of Macau, and moved to Hong Kong at the age of four. 

He founded Galaxy Entertainment Group, the first gaming company to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited in 2005, and was included in the Hang Seng Index in 2013 as a constituent.

“His vision, tremendous leadership and guidance were the foundations for the group’s development and continued success,” the statement said.

The statement underlined that the group would continue to operate its business in accordance with the business strategies laid down by the Board, adding that “the passing away of Lui will not have any impact on the operations of the group”.

According to the statement, the group will make a further announcement after the reappointment of the new Chairman of GEG, who “will be appointed in due course”.

According to Wikipedia, Lui, with his successful corporate management and extensive experience in the hospitality and tourism industry, became one of three gaming operators in Macau to be awarded a gaming concession in 2002 through a tender process conducted by the local government with Galaxy Entertainment Group, beating 18 world-class competitors, with the first phase of Galaxy Macau in Taipa opening in 2011. In 2022, Galaxy Entertainment Group was once again awarded the Macau Special Administrative Region’s new gaming concession for a period of 10 years, making it one of the city’s six IR operators.

Lui founded StarWorld Hotel in Zape in 2006 as part of a GEG investment project, Wikipedia noted. He was also a pioneer who founded K. Wah Company in 1955, which later became a multinational conglomerate, K. Wah Group.
