Integrated resort operator MGM held a grand opening for the POLY MGM MUSEUM on Friday.
The nearly 2,000-square-metre museum, a collaboration between MGM and Poly Culture, is located on the second floor of MGM MACAU.
Its inaugural exhibition, themed “The Maritime Silk Road — Discover the mystical seas and encounter the treasures of the ancient trade route”, features 228 artefacts and artworks in 184 sets, with four Bronze Zodiac Heads of the Old Summer Palace among its highlights, an MGM statement on Friday noted. The exhibits are presented in collaboration with nearly 20 national museums and international arts and cultural organisations.
Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited Pansy Ho Chiu-king said in her speech, as summarised in the statement, that Macau was once a key node on the Maritime Silk Road and has always been an important cultural hub that connects China to the world. As a result, Macau has developed a unique urban spirit that integrates East and West and connects ancient and modern times. The locally established museum will shoulder a new historic mission in the new era and its inaugural exhibition is the continuation of the essence of the Maritime Silk Road, according to Ho.
Chairman of China Poly Group Corporation Limited Liu Hualong emphasised that the museum’s inauguration indicates a significant step by Poly Group in support of the nation’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) initiative. He added that the collaboration is also a contribution by Poly Culture and MGM towards the continuation of Chinese cultural heritage, the spread of Chinese culture, and the promotion of Chinese civilisation, embodying a collective commitment to cultural preservation, mutual exchanges, and collaborative development.
The statement said that among the many prominent guests attending the Friday ceremony were Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng; Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Edmund Ho Hau Wah; Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Lu Yuyin; Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the MSAR Liu Xianfa; and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U.
