The Executive Council (ExCo) has finished discussing three by-laws (administrative regulations) on medical liability insurance, the establishment of a medical malpractice evaluation committee, and a mediation centre required by the Medical Malpractice Law, the top advisory body’s spokesman Leong Heng Teng said yesterday.

The legislature passed a medical malpractice bill submitted by the government on August 12 last year. The law will take effect on February 26.

Addressing a press conference at Government Headquarters, Leong said the by-law on the medical liability insurance states that every healthcare service provider, as an individual, is required to have at least 500,000, 1 million or 2 million patacas worth of medical liability insurance cover, depending on his or her occupation.
