Xi to attend Macau SAR’s 25th Anniversary celebration, new govt inauguration

   BEIJING – President Xi Jinping will be in Macau from December 18 to 20 (Wednesday to Friday) to attend a gathering marking the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to the motherland, Xinhua has reported this morning.

   Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will be present at the inauguration ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

   The MSAR’s new chief executive, Sam Hou Fai, other principal government officials and chief public prosecutor will be sworn in by Xi on Friday.

   Xi will also carry out an inspection tour during his stay in the MSAR.

   According to Macau’s public broadcaster TDM, this will be Xi’s sixth visit to Macau and his third as president of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). According TDM/Rádio Macau, prior to 2019, he visited Macau in 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2014.

   Meanwhile, both outgoing Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and his predecessor welcomed Xi's three-day working visit to Macau in separate statement released by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS). Ho, whose five-year term ends at midnight next Friday, said the visit was proof of the Central People's Government's strong support for Macau. Sam said Xi's visit was of "great signifance" for the MSAR. Both underlined the fundamental importance of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy for Macau's future development.
