Inflation rises in January

The city’s composite consumer price index (CPI) for last month rose 1.76 percent year on year, up by 0.32 percentage points from the 1.44 percent growth in the previous month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

According to a DSEC statement, the increment was attributable to significant year-on-year increases in package tour prices as the Chinese New Year fell in February last year but occurred in January this year.

The higher cost of eating out, rising rentals for parking spaces and higher prices of cars and gasoline also drove up the index.
