The public University of Macau (UM) said in a statement earlier this week that six students from its Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) have garnered prizes in the recent 3rd Chinese-Portuguese Translation Contest for Higher Education Institutions in China.

The contest finals were simultaneously held at UM and the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). The statement said that it was divided into “Undergraduate Group” and “Postgraduate Group”, with each category further divided into “Chinese-to-Portuguese Translation” and “Portuguese-to-Chinese Translation”.

The statement added that the texts used were mainly news and literary texts.

The winners and their respective categories are as follows: Tian Xiner won the first prize in the “Undergraduate–Portuguese-to-Chinese Translation” category; Chan Siokuan garnered the second in the “Undergraduate–Chinese-to-Portuguese Translation” category; Yu Qianyao was awarded the third prize in the “Undergraduate–Chinese-to-Portuguese Translation” category; and Ruan Chunyue won third prize in the “Undergraduate–Portuguese-to-Chinese Translation” category;

Moreover, Lian Zimo received the first prize in the “Postgraduate–Portuguese-to-Chinese Translation” category, while the “Postgraduate–Chinese-to-Portuguese Translation” category saw Mu Shuang taking home second place.

The statement said that the recent contest saw 84 students from 26 universities in Macau and the mainland taking part in the recent competition, which aimed to “promote exchanges in Portuguese language teaching between universities in Macau and the mainland, encourage students in Portuguese studies to gain practical experience in Chinese-Portuguese translation, and to identify high-quality Chinese-Portuguese bilingual talent”.
