The Judiciary Police (PJ) busted a casino loan-sharking case on Friday, arresting a man from the mainland, PJ spokesman Ho Wai Lok said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 47-year-old suspect surnamed Liang told the police that he is jobless.
According to Ho, the female victim borrowed HK$300,000 from Liang and another accomplice to gamble in a local casino on Thursday night. She was required to pay 20 percent of her winnings under certain conditions as “interest.” They also signed a “loan agreement”, with the victim signing her car, which is worth 1.2 million yuan (1.33 million patacas), over to Liang as “collateral”.
The victim then gambled in a casino in Zape, and eventually lost all the money the next day. She was then confined by Liang against her will in a hotel guestroom in the central district. While she was in captivity, the victim’s son arrived and reported the case to the police.
Police officers intervened later on Friday, rescuing the victim and apprehending Liang in the room.
Liang was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Saturday, facing charges of false imprisonment and usury, according to Ho.
