A man from Morocco was arrested on Sunday for stealing and damaging goods in a supermarket in the city centre, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Chi Weng said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Amine is in his forties. He told the police that he is jobless.

According to Wong, PSP officers received a report about the case from a supermarket last Sunday. A staff member of the supermarket recognised Amine as the suspect who had stolen items from the supermarket last month. The staff member told police he had seen Amine grab food items from the shelves and leave without paying. The staff member intercepted him and called the police.

Before the police arrived, Amine tried to escape and knocked over products on the shelves, damaging multiple items. This time, Amine stole five items worth 89 patacas and damaged 23 items worth 1,021 patacas, or 1,110 patacas in total. According to Wong, Amine had also stolen products from the same supermarket last month. Under questioning, Amine refused to cooperate.

According to Wong, Amine has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft and damaging property charges.
