The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday that according to recent news reports scammers are impersonating Google customer services and using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to simulate real human voices in order to defraud their victims.

The statement noted that victims who had fallen prey to the scammers have had their accounts hacked or blocked, with the fraudsters inducing the victims to reset their passwords in order to steal their account credentials.

The statement underlined that although the local police have so far not received any reports by victims about fraud cases using AI deep fakes in Macau, they will closely monitor the situation in Macau and its neighbouring regions. If such cases emerge in Macau, they will immediately issue a warning to the public, according to the statement.

The statement urged the public to verify the authenticity of any messages about purported blocked or stolen accounts, as well as to be vigilant about disclosing personal, financial and security-sensitive information online.

Suspected fraud should immediately be reported to the Judiciary Police’s Anti-Fraud Enquiry hotline on 8800 7777 or the crime report hotline at 993 for assistance.
