A man from the mainland has lost HK$285,000 in a “fake police” scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Sio Keong said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Cheong, the victim had received a call while in Macau on October 11, 2024, in which a man claimed to be an “officer from the Immigration Department”.
The “officer” alleged that the victim had sent out a large number of scam messages and that the case had already been filed for investigation in the mainland.
The “officer” then transferred the call to another person, who claimed to be a “Shanghai police officer”. The victim believed the “police officer” and transferred a total of HK$285,000 in three transactions to a Hong Kong bank account as the “police officer” had requested.
Cheong noted that the victim realised he had been scammed after noticing anti-fraud messages by police and finally decided to report the case to the police.
