The government is considering the possibility of using a plot next to the Macau Science Centre (MSC) complex on the Nape waterfront for the future expansion of the science popularisation facility.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Wallis O Lam revealed the option during Friday’s plenary session in the legislature’s hemicycle when she replied to oral interpellations from lawmakers.

Replying to an oral interpellation by legislator Alan Ho Ion Sang, O underlined the Education and Youth Development Bureau’s (DSEDJ) close cooperation with the Macau Science Centre aiming to create an extracurricular science popularisation classroom at the facility.

In addition, O said, the government is also planning to use part of a future education activity centre in the Zone A land reclamation area as a facility for students to practise scientific knowledge that they have learnt at school.

Lawmaker Chui Sai Cheong, also the legislature’s vice-president, suggested during the plenary session that the government use an undeveloped plot next to the Macau Science Centre complex for its future expansion, adding that the future phase two of the Macau Science Centre would become a new landmark in the future, attracting more visitors to the facility promoting science popularisation.

O said that Chui’s suggestion was fine, adding that the facility’s possible expansion would enable it to better leverage its potential.

O said that her portfolio would discuss with the public entity tasked with urban planning the possibility of using the adjacent plot to expand the Macau Science Centre’s facilities.
