Macau's 147 hotels received 1.127 million guests in February, a 7.8 percent year-on-year drop, the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.
Chinese New Year (CNY) this year fell on January 29. It fell on February 10 last year. The Chinese mainland’s week-long CNY holiday is one of Macau’s peak tourism seasons.
According to a DSEC statement on Thursday, whereas guests from mainland China (863,000) recorded a 7.6 percent decrease, foreign guests (86,000) rose 17.5 percent year-on-year; among them, those from South Korea (30,000), Japan (8,000) and Malaysia (6,000) increased 22.6 percent, 11.6 percent and 20.5 percent respectively. Guests from Thailand (6,000), Singapore (4,000) and Indonesia (4,000) rose 30.7 percent, 29.2 percent and 22.5 percent respectively. Foreigners accounted for 7.6 percent of all hotel guests in February.
The number of available guestrooms fell 5.7 percent year-on-year to 44,000, while the average room occupancy rate rose 5.5 percentage points to 90.6 percent. Guests’ average length of stay remained at 1.6 nights.
In the first two months of the year, the average room occupancy rate increased 5.2 percentage points year-on-year to 90.7 percent. The total number of guests decreased 6.3 percent year-on-year to 2.384 million, whereas their average length of stay remained at 1.6 nights.
