The police found that a local man was driving despite his driving ban after he was pulled over for speeding in Estrada do Istmo (路氹連貫公路) in central Cotai on Wednesday night, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The driver surnamed Hoi in his thirties told the police that he works as a real estate agent.

Driving during a driving ban is a criminal offence, the suspect of which faces an aggravated disobedience charge.

Estrada do Istmo is a main thoroughfare in central Cotai connecting Taipa and Coloane, with its northern section informally known as Cotai Strip with casino-hotel resorts on both sides of the road.

According to Cheong, the police set up a roadblock on the thoroughfare on Wednesday night to catch speeding drivers. At around 10 p.m., Cheong said, the police intercepted Hoi after catching him speeding.

The police radar speed gun indicated that Hoi was driving at a speed of 108 kilometres per hour, Cheong said.

Estrada do Istmo has a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.

According to Cheong, the police found that Hoi was sentenced by the court to a six-month driving ban between October 15 last year and April 14 this year for a speeding offence earlier last year.

While speeding is not a criminal offence, it is punishable by a driving ban for a period alongside a fine if the driver exceeds the speed limit by 30 kilometres or above per hour, according to the Road Traffic Law.

A driver merely faces a fine if he or she exceeds the speed limit by less than 30 kilometres per hour.

According to Cheong, Hoi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated disobedience charge.
