SJM Resorts unveiled its residency show “The Adventures of ALICE @ Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau” on Saturday at Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP), featuring two opening-day performances, the company said in a statement on that day.
The statement noted that the reimagined ballet was created in conjunction with Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) Artistic Director Septime Webre, who choreographed and directed the production. It was inspired by his 2018 ballet “ALICE (in wonderland)”, which debuted in Hong Kong and had been invited to perform in Beijing, Singapore, and the US.
According to the statement, the production unveiled at GLP is an “inspired version specially for Macau” and is set on the 360-degree stage of the integrated resort’s 1st floor Atrium. The performers feature an ensemble of HKB dancers alongside talents from Macau and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
SJM conducted multiple open auditions earlier this year to recruit dancers from Macau and other parts of the GBA, the statement said.
The residency, the statement added, features a new score by composer Ng Cheuk-yin and costumes designed by Liz Vandal of Cirque du Soleil fame, along with “ingenious stage effects, and intimate audience engagement”.
The statement quoted SJM Managing Director Daisy Ho Chiu-fung as saying: “This new venue offers a valuable stage for local performers while fostering exchanges with leading international production teams – raising the calibre of local talents and reinforcing Macau’s positioning as a ‘City of Performing Arts.’ Presented in an engaging, community-orientated format, this production brings art closer to the people.”
The statement said that the first run of the residency will continue on April 18, 19, and 20 and May 2, 3 and 4, with two performances per day.
