The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement on Friday that it has cancelled its travel alert for Thailand, noting that the kingdom’s “security” situation is stable again.

A Travel Alert - Level 1 was issued for Thailand after the deadly 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on March 28. The disaster had also led to fatalities and some property damage in Thailand, in Bangkok in particular, a popular destination for Macau residents.

The MGTO statement urged Macau residents planning to travel to Thailand to “keep paying attention to the situation” and stay vigilant.

The statement elaborated that the Travel Alert System is not proscriptive, with the choice of travelling to a destination left up to the respective individual based on provided information. Macau residents are “advised to purchase travel insurance with more comprehensive coverage, including international emergency medical evacuation, before travelling, as well as to check with their insurance companies in case of doubt about the terms and conditions of their insurance coverage”.

The statement also reaffirmed that Macau residents can contact the 24-hour tourism hotline on +853 2833 3000 or contact the respective Chinese embassy or consulate in the area, or the Global Emergency Call Centre for Consular Protection and Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its hotline: +86 10 12308 for assistance when needed.
