A local man was arrested on Saturday for theft by finding after stealing a phone worth 13,000 yuan (14, 380 patacas) that had been left on a bus stop bench, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Kong identified the suspect as a man surnamed U, who is a driver in his fifties.
According to Kong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on February 14 from a mainland man studying in Macau. He told the police that he had forgotten his phone, valued at 13,000 yuan, on a bench at a public bus stop the previous night, and it had gone missing. He immediately returned to the bus stop to search for the phone, but to no avail. He suspected that someone had taken the phone and reported the case to the police the next day.
Kong noted that through city-wide CCTV footage, the police identified U as the suspect and summoned him to a police station on Saturday.
Under questioning, U admitted to taking the phone but claimed that he was drunk that night and could not remember its whereabouts.
U has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding, according to Kong.
