The Judiciary Police (PJ) received a report from the Public Security Police (PSP) at 19:02 on Wednesday that a local middle-aged man hanged himself in his residential building’s stairwell on Rua do Mercado de Iao Hon. The victim was pronounced dead after he had been rushed to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment, according to a PJ statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the building’s doorman received a call from a resident at 18:35 on Wednesday, saying that a man had apparently hanged himself from the stairwell railing close to the rooftop. The doorman went to investigate and found the man hanging from the stairwell railing.

Police officers who were called to the scene found a nylon rope on the railing of the stairwell leading to the rooftop. There were no signs of a struggle or suspicious traces at the scene.

According to a preliminary forensic examination, there was one ligature mark on the man’s neck, and no other injuries were found.

The case was listed as a case of dead body found, and the exact cause of death will be determined after an official autopsy, the statement said, adding that the case has been transferred to the PJ Investigation Section for follow-up.
