The Public Security Police (PCP) said in a statement yesterday that starting at noon tomorrow, Hong Kong permanent residents can register to use Macau’s iris recognition system.
According to the statement, since October 2023, when the Public Security Police, in conjunction with the Macau Security Forces Affairs Bureau (DSFSM), introduced iris recognition clearance for Macau residents, the system has not only resolved issues for individuals unable to use e-channels due to unclear fingerprints but has also enabled fast and hygienic “contactless” clearance when used in combination with the “My border crossing” QR code. Additionally, the verification process is one to two seconds faster than traditional e-channel methods.
The Public Security Police also pointed out in their statement that 300,000 Macau residents have registered for iris recognition clearance. As of the end of last month, the system has been used over 15.78 million times, with recent months seeing 42 percent of Macau residents opting for iris recognition when crossing the border.
According to the statement, the Public Security Police will add 71 new iris recognition lanes across Macau six border checkpoints this year. The authorities will continue to monitor their usage and explore expanding the eligibility to non-resident workers (NRWs), non-local students, and other long-term stayers in Macau.
