The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement on its website yesterday that it expects to hoist tropical cyclone stand-by signal No.1 within the next two days.
According to the SMG website, Signal No.1 is a “precautionary signal”, indicating that the centre of a tropical cyclone is forming within 800 kilometres of Macau and may affect the special administrative region.
The statement noted that a low-pressure area located in the central South China Sea is developing and is expected to gradually evolve into a tropical cyclone within 800 kilometres of Macau over the next two days.
The bureau advised members of the public to observe the latest information as well as to take precautions. Aside from staying updated, the SMG website lists certain precautionary measures including securing items such as flower pots that might be blown away or damaged.
Meanwhile, the observatory also warned on its website that Macau is expected to experience very hot weather today and tomorrow, putting up a Yellow hot weather alert and cautioning against heatstroke.
Macau’s hot weather alert comprises two levels: Yellow, which denotes that it is “very hot”, and Orange, which means it is “extremely hot”.
With temperatures to go up to 33°C or even higher, the bureau said that one should frequently drink water, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and protect oneself from ultraviolet (UV) rays, as well as not to stay in vehicles parked outdoors for long periods of time.
Those engaged in outdoor activities are also advised to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and, if feeling unwell, find a shaded area to rest at once.
