An ad hoc concern group for the preservation of Coloane’s bucolic Lai Chi Vun Village submitted a petition to the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) yesterday, urging it to initiate a cultural heritage evaluation of the village and its traditional shipyards, with the aim of preserving them as an integral part of the city’s industrial heritage.

Speaking to reporters after handing the petition to an official outside the bureau in Praça do Tap Seac, the group’s deputy leader Tam Chon Ip said he and his fellow activists were urging the government to suspend the demolition of the shipyards and to come up with a concrete redevelopment plan for the village.
The shipyards went out of business over a decade ago.

Tam said his group had collected 670 signatures for the petition. The signature campaign was launched late last month.
