The “Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton Tournament 2025” will be held from July 29 to August 3 at the Macao East Asian Games Dome in Cotai, with this edition’s applications from players worldwide surpassing last year’s and featuring an increased total prize money of US$370,000 (nearly 3.0 million patacas).

The six-day competition, sanctioned by Badminton World Federation (BWF), is part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300.

This tournament received applications from 442 players from 29 nations and regions, with 269 qualifying, according to information from yesterday’s press conference at The Londoner Macao in Cotai. Players will be competing across five events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

The Chinese mainland’s gold medal Olympians Chen Yufei and Chen Qingchen and last year’s Men’s Singles champion Angus Ng Ka-long from Hong Kong, as well as six local athletes, are competing along with top players from the mainland, Denmark, Indonesia and Malaysia, among other places.

Addressing yesterday’s press conference, Sands China Executive Vice Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying-wai said in his speech that with the number of players competing from around the world, the tournament is “a skills exchange platform for global players”.

Local athletes ready to give their all

Gearing up to represent Macau in this year’s tournament are Vong Kok Weng and Pui Chi Wa, with both young athletes promising to give their all.

Speaking with the Post in a separate interview after the press conference, Vong, a 23-year-old student studying for a master’s degree in Sports at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), said that he was excited to play and represent Macau in the tournament.

Competing in Men’s Doubles, Vong said he aims to play well, hoping to use his previous experience from playing in last year’s competition, along with the hard work he has put into training and competing in other tournaments. He will be competing in Germany prior to the Macau tournament, Vong added, wanting to use this opportunity to build confidence and preparation.

“Macau Open is one of the most important [competitions] that we have joined because this is our hometown”, he said, pointing out that the local players are excited to give their all.

Pui, 20, told the Post that she felt honoured to represent Macau. Playing in the mixed doubles, the University of Macau (UM) student noted that she had previously played at 100-level tournaments*, striving to do well in this competition and highlighting that winning anything would be an accomplishment.

Tickets for the upcoming tournament are on sale, with matches from July 29 to August 1 priced at 150 patacas, while the semifinals and finals from August 2-3 are 400 patacas. For more details, visit www.macauopenbadminton.org.mo
