The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast on its official website yesterday that Tropical Depression “Danas” will affect Macau from this afternoon.

Last Friday, a low-pressure area developed into a tropical cyclone near Luzon, Philippines. By Saturday, Tropical Depression “Danas” had formed and initially appeared to move towards Macau. The local observatory hoisted the Standby Signal No.1 for a while.  However, “Danas” shifted course towards China’s Taiwan region on Sunday and made landfall in the south of Taiwan on that day.

After completing its northward journey across Taiwan, “Danas” then changed course again and made landfall in Fujian Province, yesterday continuing to move south-westward towards Guangzhou to complete its unfinished journey.

According to the observatory, under the influence of a trough of low pressure associated with the remnants of “Danas”, the weather in Macau is expected to be unstable with frequent showers from today to early Saturday, heavy occasionally with thunderstorms, accompanied by strong gusty winds.

At 8 p.m. yesterday, according to the local weather station, “Danas” was estimated to be about 540 kilometres northeast of Macau, and the bureau forecast that “Danas” will move at around 18 kilometres per hour gradually moving inland and weakening.

The observatory urged members of the public to pay close attention to its latest weather alerts, make timely adjustments to their travel arrangements and be aware of the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas due to the short-term torrential rainfall.
