Aiming to cultivate global governance talents and promote practical cooperation between China and ASEAN for local youths and to deepen their understanding of regional cooperation and explore pathways for green transition, a training programme called “Youth Diplomats – Model United Nations (MUN)”* was held on Wednesday and yesterday.
Yesterday’s award ceremony for the training programme was held at the private Macau Millenium College in Nape, organised by the Chinese Youth Advancement Association, themed “ASEAN 10+3 Summit” and “Carbon Peak”, and over 60 youths participated.
The ASEAN Plus Three (APT) consist of 10 ASEAN member states and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Japan and South Korea. Its 28th edition will be held in Malaysia in October, when East Timor (Timor-Leste) is slated to become it’s the association’s 11th member state.
Carbon Peak refers to the point in time when a country, region, or organisation reaches its highest annual level of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, after which emissions begin to decline.
Chinese Youth Advancement Association Chairman Si Iat said in his speech yesterday that the training programme closely aligned with China’s “Dual Carbon Goals” strategy and the vision of building a “China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future”.
Si also said that though the role playing of diplomatic negotiations and policy debates the programme guided its young participants in better understanding the interplay between multilateral negotiation mechanisms and green development policies.
Si underlined that Macau, as a cultural hub under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework, needs to cultivate versatile governance talents with a global vision and expertise in international rules.
In a related development, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, attended the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Wang co-hosted the meeting, which was attended by foreign ministers of ASEAN members, ASEAN observers, as well as the secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
