Three locals were separately cheated out of a total of 140,000 yuan (about 162,000 patacas) by one of the eight phone scam gangs busted by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau earlier this month, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said yesterday.

According to the spokesperson, the locals are aged between 30 and 62. They were cheated out of 40,000 yuan, 10,000 yuan and 90,000 yuan respectively. The spokesperson said that the 15-member gang which defrauded the three victims was headed by a mainland couple.

The spokesperson said the eight gangs had 450 members in total. They were involved in over 800 alleged phone scam cases, amassing ill-gotten gains of about 10 million yuan.
