The opening ceremony for “Art Macao: Macao International Biennale 2025” will be held tomorrow at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Small Auditorium, with the main exhibition to open to the public the following day at the Macau Museum of Art (MAM), the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement on Tuesday.
Art Macao 2025 runs from this month through October.
Curator Feng Boyi, whose works focus primarily on contemporary Chinese art, was quoted by the statement as saying that this year’s theme is “Hey, what brings you here?”, posing introspective questions on identity, origin, and belonging. According to the statement, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the “history, memory, and current complexities of Macau in a global context.” The statement highlights that Feng connects the featured works through spatial installations and thematic contrasts to provoke dialogue between the self and the other.
The main exhibition spans three floors of the museum, featuring 80 artworks by 46 artists from 13 countries and regions. Among them, the statement said, are conceptual pieces by Bart Hess, from the Netherlands, who is known to capture subtle interaction between the human body and fashion using wax; German Gregor Schneider reputed for reconstructing physical laws of spatial perception through architectural installations; fellow German Tobias Rehberger, who explores the dialectical relationship between humans and their physical environments through systematic constructions in social contexts; and Xu Bing, from the Chinese mainland, who reflects on human civilisations through images of lakes captured by satellites. The statement noted that these works explore everything from physical perception to human civilisation through surreal and abstract forms.
The biennale also includes outreach activities such as curator talks and workshops. Nearly 30 exhibitions will be presented citywide across six thematic sections, according to the statement.
