Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that its officers at Qingmao checkpoint nabbed a man attempting to smuggle 28 used smartphones in an e-scooter into the mainland.

Gongbei Customs announced the case, which was detected last Tuesday, in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, at 5 p.m. last Tuesday, a traveller wearing a grey short-sleeved shirt and pushing an electric scooter entered the mainland through the “Green Channel” at the Qingmao Port (checkpoint) traveller inspection site.

Customs officers at the scene noticed that he appeared to be nervous and decided to intercept and search him. Upon further inspection, customs officers found 28 used smartphones wrapped in plastic film and hidden in the battery compartment of the traveller’s electric scooter.

In the statement, Gongbei Customs reminded the public that according to relevant regulations, evading customs supervision by hiding or bringing goods subject to duties into the mainland constitutes smuggling. If the circumstances are severe enough to constitute a crime, criminal liability will be pursued.

This undated handout provided by Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs yesterday shows 22 used phones sealed in plastic film seized by Qingmao checkpoint customs officers last Tuesday.
