Macau Customs busts 9 smuggling cases in 6 days

The Macau Customs Services announced in a statement on Monday that they had busted nine smuggling cases between July 25 and 30.

According to the statement, customs officers seized a total of 70 used mobile phones, 75 kilograms of uninspected fruit, 5,120 bottles of shower gel, and three blood collection and three weighing devices.

In the statement, customs identified the nine smugglers as being aged between 28 and 78-years-old from Hong Kong, mainland China and local residents.

On July 25, customs officers at the Barrier Gate intercepted a cross-border vehicle in the inbound lane based in an alert from the “Risk Management System.” An inspection revealed 75 kilograms of uninspected fruit smuggled into Macau. On the same day at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a man exhibiting an abnormally stiff gait during a routine inspection. An inspection revealed 26 used mobile phones to be smuggled into the mainland.

On July 28, customs officers at Zhuhai Macau Cross-border Industrial Zone checkpoint intercepted a lorry through the “Risk Management System.” An inspection revealed 5,120 bottles of shower gel being smuggled into Macau. On the same day, customs officer at the Macau-Hengqin joint border intercepted a vehicle through the “Risk Management System.” An inspection revealed three blood collection and weighing devices to be smuggled into Macau.

On July 30, customs officers at Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a woman exhibiting nervous behaviour during a routine inspection. An inspection revealed 16 used mobile phones to be smuggled into the mainland.

According to Macau’s External Trade Law, the eight people who smuggled electronic products or shower gel face a maximum fine of 50,000 patacas each, while the seized contraband has been confiscated. The case involving the fruit smuggler has been transferred to the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) for further investigation and disposal of the fruit.
