The Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement yesterday that a 37-year-old local man with a history of chronic illness is in a serious condition after being infected with influenza.
According to the statement, the man came down with a fever, cough and sore throat on Wednesday last week, after which he sought treatment at a medical institution, which the statement did not identify.
As his symptoms persisted and he began to develop dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) on Saturday, the statement said, he sought treatment at the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre at that time where he was then hospitalised and was diagnosed with influenza A complicated with pneumonia.
According to the statement, the man’s condition worsened yesterday so that he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) where he was put on a ventilator.
The man was in a serious condition at the time of yesterday’s statement.
The statement said that the man had not received a seasonal influenza jab.
This year’s 4th Legionnaires’ disease case
Meanwhile, Macau recorded this year’s fourth case of Legionnaires’ disease on Friday last week, the bureau announced at that time.
The patient is a 56-year-old local man with a history of chronic illness. He visited the mainland alone between July 19 and Monday last week.
After returning to Macau on Monday last week, he came down with a fever, after which he developed shortness of breath on Wednesday last week.
The man sought treatment at a public health centre on Thursday last week, after which he was then transferred to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for follow-up treatment where he was diagnosed with pneumonia in his left lung and was then hospitalised.
The patient tested positive for Legionella pneumophila at the public hospital on Friday last week, because of which he was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease.
