The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted tropical cyclone Standby Signal No.1 at 7 p.m. yesterday after a tropical depression came within 800 kilometres from Macau.

The bureau said on its website last night that the Standby Signal No.1 was expected to remain hoisted early this morning.

Depending on its strength, Macau’s observatory classifies a tropical cyclone into tropical depression, tropical storm, severe tropical storm, typhoon, severe typhoon, and super typhoon.

Signal No.1 is the lowest of Macau’s tropical cyclone warning signals. It is hoisted when a tropical cyclone comes within 800 kilometres from Macau. Its higher warning typhoon signals are the No.3, No.8, No.9, and No.10.

Late last night, according to the SMG website, the tropical depression was about 690 kilometres south of Macau. It was moving west-northwest at a speed of 18 kilometres per hour, towards the area south of Hainan Island.
