A jobless local man was arrested on Sunday at his home in Zape for stealing two smartphones worth 15,000 patacas from a construction site in Cotai last Thursday, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said at a press briefing on Monday.
The 26-year-old suspect surnamed Choi is unemployed. He worked previously as a clerk for a construction company but was dismissed in May.
According to Wong, a manager of a construction company reported to the Public Security Police last Thursday that two smartphones which he had left in the construction site office in Cotai had vanished and he suspected that the phones worth 15,000 patacas had been stolen.
PSP officers scrutinised CCTV footage of the construction site office as well as the nearby area and identified Choi who was previously employed by the company. The Public Security Police went to Choi’s flat in Avenida da Amizade on Sunday and arrested him. The officers found the two phones in the flat. Under questioning, Choi admitted that he had stolen the smartphones as he had had no income since he lost his job in May. He sneaked into his former company’s office last Thursday afternoon when the door was unlocked and no one was there. He stole the two smartphones which were on a desk.
Choi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Wong.
