Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai will travel to Beijing today where he will attend tomorrow’s grand gathering, including a military parade, in Tian’anmen Square marking the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) announced in a statement yesterday.
President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will deliver a speech at the grand gathering tomorrow morning.
Also, as part of the nation’s commemorative activities, a reception will be held in the nation’s capital at noon tomorrow, where Xi will also deliver a speech. In the evening, a gala will be held, which will be attended by Party and state leaders, according to the central government’s announcements earlier this year.
Yesterday’s GCS statement said that Sam will lead a local delegation of over 140 people from various segments of Macau’s civil society to Beijing from today to Thursday to attend commemorative activities marking the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
According to the statement, the delegation members, including Sam, will attend tomorrow morning’s grand gathering and tomorrow evening’s gala, while Sam will also attend tomorrow noon’s reception.
According to the statement, Sam’s delegation will comprise local government officials, members of the local government’s top advisory Executive Council, members of the Legislative Assembly (AL), local judges and prosecutors, and descendants of patriotic figures who contributed to the War of Resistance, as well as representatives from various other segments of Macau’s civil society such as patriotic community associations, the business sector, the education sector, different professional sectors, the religious sector, the public security forces, the Macanese community, local youth and students.
Sam to meet central govt officials
Meanwhile, yesterday’s GCS statement also announced that after attending the commemorative activities concluding tomorrow night, Sam and some of the local government officials will stay in Beijing until Saturday where they will visit several ministries and commissions of the central government, while other delegation members will return to Macau on Thursday.
According to the statement, Sam’s meetings with the central government officials will cover topics such as advancing Macau’s appropriate economic diversification and Macau’s participation in the development of the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
Officials accompanying Sam during the meetings will include Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai Kin Ip, Macau Customs Service Director-General Adriano Marques Ho, Sam’s chief-of-cabinet Chan Kak, and Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau (DSEPDR) Director Cheong Chok Man.
In February 2014, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) designated September 3 as the Victory Day of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, to mark the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on September 2, 1945.
Local govt officials, civil society reps to watch live broadcast
Meanwhile, a separate GCS statement announced that the local government will organise a session at the Macao Polytechnic University’s (MPU) Multi Sport Pavilion in Zape and the University of Macau’s (UM) Sports Complex tomorrow morning where government officials, student body representatives and other young people, and members from various other segments of civil society will watch the live broadcast of the grand gathering to be held in Tian’anmen Square.
The statement noted that the attendees will listen to Xi’s speech to be delivered during the grand gathering for them to “deeply understand the spirit” of his speech, after which they will watch the military parade.
The statement also said that local higher education institutions and schools will also arrange for their students to watch the live broadcast on their respective campuses.
Moreover, the statement said, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) will organise a forum at Kao Yip Middle School in Nape tomorrow afternoon where scholars will brief students and other young people about the history of the nation’s heroic war of resistance against Japanese aggression.
