A young local man has fallen victim to a “fake police scam”, losing a total of 326,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Chong, the man received a call on Tuesday morning from someone impersonating a “law enforcement officer from the mainland.” The caller claimed that his mainland-registered phone number was involved in criminal activities. Following the caller’s instructions, the victim participated in a video call and enabled screen sharing while entering his bank account number and password. He was also told not to log into his online bank account during the process.

Later, the victim logged into his online bank account and discovered that a total of 195,000 patacas and HK$128,000 (131,000 patacas) had been transferred out in four transactions. Realising he had been scammed, the victim reported a loss of 326,000 patacas to the police yesterday.
