Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai met with Industry and Information Technology Minister Li Lecheng in Beijing yesterday where they exchanged views on advancing Macau’s new-type industrialisation, promoting the city’s appropriate economic diversification through technological innovation, and supporting Macau’s integration into the nation’s overall development, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) yesterday.

The statement noted that after attending the nation’s commemorative activities on Wednesday marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Sam is staying in Beijing until tomorrow where he is scheduled to meet top officials of several ministries and commissions of the central government, covering topics such as supporting Macau’s appropriate economic diversification and its high-quality development.

During yesterday morning’s meeting with Li, the statement said, Sam expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for its long-standing support and guidance for Macau’s development, while underlining that President Xi Jinping, during his inspection to Macau late last year, laid out higher requirements for Macau to advance the high-quality development of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

According to the statement, Sam underlined that his government is advancing the planning and development of its four future large-scale projects aiming to inject new impetus into Macau’s development for the long term, including a science and technology research and development industrial park which aims to enhance Macau’s innovation ecosystem and foster the city’s appropriate economic diversification.

During the meeting, Sam said that the Macau government expects to deepen cooperation with the ministry in technological innovation and industrial collaboration, adding that his government will seek guidance from the ministry on the planned industrial park’s strategic role, development path, industrial layout, and the acquisition and allocation of technological innovation talents, with the aim of fostering the commercialisation of scientific and technological achievements and enhancing Macau’s overall competitiveness.

According to the statement, Sam also pledged the local government’s commitment to strengthening Macau’s internal and external connectivity and enriching the city’s role as a service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Meanwhile, according to a separate GCS statement last night, Sam met with the minister of the General Administration of Customs, Sun Meijun, yesterday afternoon where he expressed his gratitude to the General Administration of Customs for rolling out new measures aiming to facilitate Macau’s integration into the development of the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

According to the statement, Sam said during the meeting that he expects strengthened cooperation between the local government and the General Administration of Customs based on the solid foundation of collaboration between the two sides, with the aim of facilitating the in-depth cooperation zone in achieving its second-phase development goals.
