Artworks by freelance illustrator Yolanda Kog are being presented in an exhibition titled “Self-Publishing Experiment Space — Yolanda Kog’s Independent Publications Exhibition” (私製出版實驗場—小島元春獨立出版物作品展) at the 10 Fantasia gallery until October 3.
Exhibitiongoers stepping into gallery’s room B06 have a chance to explore Kog’s works created between 2018 and 2025. One can find zines*, collections of illustrations, reprints of previous projects, along with more experimental works. They comprise both personal works and community projects.
In a recent statement displayed at the gallery, Kog highlighted her self-published zines and the process behind them, highlighting the enjoyment and control she gets but also the difficulties and challenges that come with self-publishing. She also talks about the reprints of her zines in the statement, saying while she enjoys working alone and handling things independently, she fears overlooking shortcomings while also thinking some parts could be improved in some way.
“These works bring me different insights and, to some extent, reflect my growth along the creative journey – the joys, setbacks, excitement, hesitation, day and night, those moments of focused flow”, each moment being a reminder of the happiness she feels when creating, Kog pointed out in the statement.
The exhibition is among those concurrently held for the 2025 Picture Book Festival, all running through October 3. One can visit from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesdays to Sundays. It is closed on Mondays.
*A zine, short for “magazine” or “fanzine”, is a self-published work that is typically produced in small quantities. They often feature a mix of written content, illustrations, and various artistic styles and cover a wide range of topics from art to politics. - Poe
