Rice evokes childhood memories for many, considering that it is Asia’s staple food, and it is also this grain that fed acclaimed choreographer Lin Hwai-min with the inspirations to create “Rice”, a contemporary dance piece to be staged at Macau Cultural Centre on Saturday.

“Rice”, originally created to honour the land that had nurtured Lin’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre since its founding and to mark the Taiwanese dance group’s 40th anniversary in 2013, is Lin’s third dance piece with rice as a key feature in the performance.

In a recent e-mail interview with The Macau Post Daily, Lin said it wasn’t until he visited the township of Chihshang, also known locally as “hometown of rice”, in Taitung county on the southeastern coast of Taiwan that he wanted to create a dance piece about rice.
