The University of Macau (UM) announced in a Saturday statement that it has begun conducting postgraduate programmes in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, following approval from the Ministry of Education in Beijing and in alignment with the local government’s development goals.
The public university is currently building its second campus in the zone.
The statement pointed out that the university aims to conduct teaching and research activities for several new faculties – the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Design – at two Transitional Research and Education Sites in the zone until the completion of its second-campus construction project on the island.
Focused primarily on postgraduate education, the sites offer courses in disciplines such as artificial intelligence (AI), microelectronics, public health, quantitative finance, electromechanical engineering, and industrial design, with the aim of promoting the integration of education, technology, and talent, the statement pointed out.
In order to enhance research support, the university has expanded its resources to include the Hengqin branches of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (“very-large-scale integration”) and the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, the statement added.
The statement pointed out that a “Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics” has also been established, alongside joint laboratories with enterprises across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
For the 2026/2027 academic year, UM will continue to conduct postgraduate programmes and research in areas including robotics, smart power grids, data science, and business analytics, the statement noted, adding that it also offers scholarships such as the UM PhD Scholarship, the UM PhD Teaching Research Assistant, and the UM Scholarship for STEM* Programmes.
Applications for the 2026/2027 academic year are open until March 13, 2026. Interested candidates may apply through UM’s official website or contact the Graduate School via email at gradschool@um.edu.mo.
*STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is an umbrella term used to group together these distinct but closely related academic and professional disciplines. The term is primarily used in the context of education policy and workforce development to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in these high-tech fields. – DeepSeek
