The Judiciary Police (PJ) apprehended two men from Malaysia on Sunday for trafficking 718 grams of methamphetamine (also known as ice) valued at 2.15 million patacas, PJ spokesman Lei Chi Hou said during a special press conference yesterday.

Lei identified the suspects as a 21-year-old male street vendor surnamed Tan, and a 33-year-old male surnamed Goh who claimed to be jobless.

According to Lei, based on intelligence, the Judiciary Police (PJ) identified Tan and Goh as members of a cross-border drug trafficking syndicate who were planning to smuggle drugs via Macau through the local airport.

On Sunday, the duo entered Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge checkpoint and then proceeded to the airport. While Tan checked in for his flight and prepared to depart, Goh monitored him from a distance at the airport. The police apprehended Tan at the scene and later arrested Goh, who attempted to leave the airport after seeing Tan successfully enter the restricted area. The police found three packages of methamphetamine weighing about 718 grams, with an estimated street value of 2.154 million patacas, in his luggage.

Under questioning, both suspects admitted to receiving the drugs under the arrangement of the cross-border drug syndicate, intending to smuggle the drugs out of Macau through the airport. They told the police that they were promised a total payment of 10,000 Malaysian ringgit (19,000 patacas) from the syndicate.

The duo were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, each facing a drug-trafficking charge.
