The Public Security Police (PSP) apprehended a male non-resident worker (NRW) from the mainland on Thursday for stealing 5,000 patacas that had been left behind at a bank automated teller machine (ATM), PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Cheong identified the suspect as a meat handler surnamed Xu who is in his fifties.
According to Cheong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on July 29 from a man who said that after withdrawing cash from an ATM at a bank on Avenida de Venceslau de Morais (慕拉士大馬路), he accidentally left 5,000 patacas next to the machine. Upon returning, he discovered that the cash had vanished. After the bank confirmed that the money had been taken by someone else, he immediately reported the case to the police.
Through citywide CCTV surveillance footage, the police identified Xu as the suspect and summoned him to a police station on Thursday. Under questioning, Xu admitted to stealing the cash out of greed, claiming that he had already spent all the money.
Xu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
