According to a statement provided by the Civil Aviation Authority of Macau (AACM) on Sunday, the local airport has launched seven new smart security screening channels in its Central Security Screening Zone, aiming to reduce passenger waiting times and improve screening efficiency during peak travel periods.

The rollout marks a major step in the airport’s smart-management upgrades, the statement said.

The statement noted that the optimisation project began in July this year and has been carried out in phases to meet rising passenger traffic and screening demands, adding that two channels from the first phase entered stable operation last month after staff training, technical testing, and safety checks by AACM.

The remaining five channels in the second phase began serving passengers on Sunday, aiming to expand the airport’s screening capacity ahead of the Christmas and New Year holiday season, the statement added.

The new facilities feature full-body scanners, automated baggage tray return systems, and human-body image analysis technology, which collectively aim to enhance both accuracy and throughput in security checks, the statement said.

The regulator  said that passengers can expect noticeably shorter queues and smoother screening “particularly during peak travel seasons or holidays”. A planned eighth smart lane – the final phase of the project – is expected to enter service next month following testing and verification, according to the statement.

The statement noted that AACM worked closely with the airport concessionaire CAM throughout the upgrade, pointing out that “throughout the planning phase of the optimisation project, we have coordinated closely with the airport concessionaire to ensure all procedures were completed in accordance with the processes approved by our authority, guaranteeing dual achievements in smart management and safe operations.”

With the latest smart channels now operating, Macau International Airport aims to deliver faster, more efficient screening for passengers while maintaining stringent safety standards, the statement said, adding that the final channel’s launch in December aims to complete the airport’s full transition to upgraded smart security facilities.
