The 42nd edition of the Macau Walk for a Million, organised by the Charity Fund from the Readers of Macao Daily News, was held yesterday, having attracted about 40,000 participants and raised over 17 million patacas.
The fund’s chairwoman, Tina Ho Teng Iat, reported the numbers while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the walk.
The Chinese-language Macao Daily News is the city’s top-selling newspaper.
As last year, this year’s three-kilometre walk started near the Kun Iam statue on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen at 10 a.m., travelling along the avenue, before arriving in Praça do Lago Sai Van, i.e., the square outside Macau Tower, from where it travelled along Avenida Panorâmica do Lago Sai Van and turned into Rua de S. Tiago da Barra outside the Pousada de São Tiago hotel, before arriving at the destination outside Ma Kok (A-Ma) Temple in Barra.
The walk’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place at the starting point just before 10 a.m., was officiated by dignitaries such as Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee Vice Chairman Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Deputy Director Huang Liuquan, Foreign Ministry Acting Commissioner Cheng Lei, and Legislative Assembly (AL) President André Cheong Weng Chon.
The walk route was shortened to the current version last year. Previously, the walk turned into Avenida da República en route to the destination at Barra via Avenida Doutor Stanley Ho after travelling past Praça do Lago Sai Van, with a total length of about four kilometres.
