The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) announced in a statement yesterday that Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs officers seized 64 used smartphones in two electric wheelchairs seats.
According to the statement, on Thursday customs officers at the Gongbei Port (border checkpoint) arrival hall, intercepted a Hong Kong traveller surnamed Wang, while he was driving through the checkpoint in his electric wheelchair. The officers had discovered an anomaly which turned out to be two dozen used smartphones concealed in the wheelchair’s seat.
On the same day, customs officers also intercepted a Hong Kong traveller surnamed Yeung, which unearthed 40 used smartphones hidden in Yeung’s electric wheelchair seat.
In the statement, GACC reminded the public that according to relevant regulations, evading customs supervision by hiding or bringing goods subject to taxes into the mainland constitutes smuggling. If the circumstances are severe enough to constitute a crime, criminal liability will be pursued.
