The Public Security Police (PSP) apprehended a man from Hong Kong on Sunday for theft by finding, PSP spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Lei identified the suspect as a waiter in his fifties surnamed Lau.
According to Lei, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on October 11 from a middle-aged local man who said that he lost his smartphone, which he had left on a bench near the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Suspecting that someone had stolen it, the victim immediately reported a loss of 2,000 patacas to the police.
Through their citywide CCTV surveillance footage, the police identified Lau as the suspect and apprehended him on Sunday when he was entering Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Under questioning, Lau claimed that he was unable to contact the owner of the phone and had discarded it on a street in the Chinese mainland.
Lau has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
